Promote mental health through lasting conversations and collaboration of local arts and culture.
The annual Fragments Multi-Arts Gala event will take place on March 23rd, 2018 7pm-9pm at the brand new cSPACE gallery in support of Calgary’s Centre for Suicide Prevention (CSP).
Last year, Fragments Gala successfully donated over $1600 to CSP and we are more than
thrilled to collaborate with them for a second year.
This year, we will have three local bands and four visual artists presenting their work,
highlighting a theme of memory & community.
CSP will have informed staff on site to provide support, education, and to speak on the
impact suicide can have in our lives and what we can do to enhance awareness, prevention, and
local mental health initiatives.
"The official Fragments multi-art gala is the crossroads where film, music, visual art, performance and the creative spark in each of us meets. Fragments was born in 2010 when a local visionary musician Chris Tenz decided it was time to try and bring together the talent that exists everywhere in Calgary. He created a network community within an annual event where artists can gather to share, inspire, display, perform and pass on creative energy to each other and the public.
Fragments ran successfully from 2010 - 2013 until Chris moved to London and started his own record label. In 2016, our dear friend Chris passed away by suicide.
As of last year, Fragments has returned to Calgary, and with it Chris' dream of a united community of talent" - Ricky Fraser, Founding Collaborator
2018 Fragments will feature local musicians, photographers, cinematographers, and visual artists.

In the news: http://www.metronews.ca/news/calgary/2016/12/18/calgary-musician-restarts-art-event-honour-friend-suicide.html
According to Stats Canada, 3,890 suicides took place in 2009 with rates rising to 3,926 in 2012. Suicide deaths affect nearly all age groups, with the highest rates in those aged 40 to 59, and ranked as the ninth leading cause of death for young people aged 15 to 34.
"Research shows that mental illness is the most important risk factor for suicide; and that more than 90% of people who commit suicide have a mental or addictive [circumstance].
Depression is the most common illness among those who die from suicide, with approximately 60% suffering from this condition. No single determinant, including mental illness, is enough on its own to cause a suicide. Rather, suicide typically results from the interaction of many factors, for example: mental illness, marital breakdown, financial hardship, deteriorating physical health, a major loss, or a lack of social support" (StatsCan, 2015, http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/82-624-x/2012001/article/11696-eng.htm) .
Given the alarming stigma associated with suicide and mental health, more is needed from all of us. It takes knowledge from the people around the person in crisis to be able to recognize signs as well as support and promote accessible resources.
Centre for Suicide Prevention (CSP)
As a branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, CSP provide a wealth of accessible resources, information, and workshops regarding mental health and suicide in Calgary, Alberta. The non-profit organization will have a strong presence at Fragments including a booth with informed representatives as well as speaking with us about the impact suicide can have on our lives and what we can do to help. (https://www.suicideinfo.ca/ )
CSP will receive 100% of proceeds, which will go directly to the development of education materials that present the most current research in easy and accessible forms for everyone.
